Roller Skating Weekend!

so i've been gone forever...sorry about that...life becomes hectic when you're a college junior.
this weekend in particular has been quite a crazy one...i teach roller skating for the white marsh recreation program and this weekend was our annual show...our theme this year was summer camp...very creative if you ask me...we had daytime activities (i.e. baseball, canoeing, hiking etc), a section about friendship (i assume i can leave that one to your imagination), a section for the mess hall (hot dogs, mac and cheese, pizza) and then a section of nighttime activities (i.e. roasting marshmallows, telling ghost stories, stargazing, going to the camp dance) and it went over great!!!

this year i was featured in the camp dance social and i had the honor of skating to my mother's signature song of "last dance" by donna summer. it was truly a privilege to have the opportunity to skate tot a song that means so much to my mother. and at today's show so many of her old skaters came to support my program that they got to see me skate to song that the associate so well with my mother. made the old lady cry, that was the goal after all!

this year we had about 150 children in our program which is record size and i'm so grateful for it. my skating kids are one the most important things in my life. without them i don't know what i would do. skating in general is something very near and dear to my heart, it has always been an important staple in my family and carrying on the family tradition from my mother has truly been a gift. it's sad to see another year go by and know that some of my skaters will be moving on with their lives and going on to bigger and better things and they will truly be missed, but it does open the door for new skaters to shine, which will be wonderful in itself.

Elections!!!!

so the united states presidential elections are in one week people...i hope that you all are planning on going out and voting...here's my view on the whole situation...

i hear people constantly say that you have to go out and vote, it's your right, it's your right, it's your right...let me clear this crap up right now...it's not your right...it's your privilege and responsibility to vote...it is not something you are born with right to have, it is not an inalienable right like that of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness...it was something that was fought for, for us...as a woman i think it would be an insult to women like alice paul if i didn't go out a vote...a true slap in the face to those who gave me a privilege...that's what i think...you're welcome to disagree but that's what i think...

so i'm totally for everyone supporting their own views but i feel that if you're going to bash a candidate you should at least know your stuff...i get that people don't like obama for a variety of reasons but watch this video and i think you'll agree with me whatever side you're on...these people are just stupid!

Jennifer Hudson and College Work

i just read on yahoo's homepage that they found jennifer hudson's nephew dead...it's so horrible, just a few days after her mother and brother were murdered the last glimmer of hope was finding her missing nephew and then he ends up dead it's just so horrible...yes i know that these things happen everyday and that most of the time we don't even notice...the world just passes by and we forget about it...so yes the world's attention turns just when these things happen to celebrities but it's tragic nonetheless, no matter who it's happening to...i think that's my point...in any case, it's tragic and i wish we lived in such a world where these things didn't happen...utopian i know, but we could use a little more utopia in this world

so i'm a junior in college and i'm really feeling the effects of it...crazy amounts of work, well mainly reading...so in all honesty i can't sit here and blog i've got work to do! haha well i'll see you again soon!

ok so that's a rather jumbled titled for this blog so let me break it down...it's been a hell of a week...

part 1:

so for those of you who don't know i've been working of a novel for the part three years and just this summer i finally finished it...on a whim i sent a synopsis to a local publisher and i didn't expect to hear anything back but the next day i got an email that they would like to read my book! two words...HOLY CROW! this is the coolest thing ever...for those of you who know me really well you know i've dabbled a lot in the art of writing, but nothing like this has ever happened before...i'm doing my best not to get my hopes up but i am really excited...i'm right now working on getting a copyright, the publisher's website said that it wasn't necessary but i'd rather be safe than sorry right?...i'll be sure to keep you all updated as i find out more...but it's really really really exciting...(and yea this is me trying not to get my hopes up haha)

part 2:

let me start by saying that i am a twenty year old who loves to read and i'm a hopeless romantic...that being said i'm completely obsessed with the twilight books...i didn't think that i would be but hey it turns out that i am...thank you miss koeddel...anywho the movie for the first book comes out the end of next month and while i normally find all movie adaptations of books horrible and an insult to the novel (i.e. ella enchanted...don't get me started on ella enchanted...another story for another day) i actually think i'm really going to like it...it may just be because robert pattinson is playing the role of edward (in my opinion the new mr. darcy) but i think i'm just really excited for the movie...anyway the new and final trailer for the movie just came out today and i'm even more excited than ever...this is one report that is impressed and now ready for 11/21 so that she can see it!

part 3 (and the most important of all!):

so on saturday my cousin nikki is going to get married! i'm really happy for her and i'm also really excited because she was nice enough to ask me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding! i've never been in a wedding before! there are so many good things about this weekend...ever since half my family moved away to the eastern shore of maryland i never get to see them...it's good to get to see your family in times of happiness when all too often get togethers are in times of sadness...i think that makes this weekend extra special...my favorite memories for as long as i live will be of the summers of my childhood...my father's entire family lived within about five minutes of each other and all summer every summer we would spend all the time we could together at my grandparents' pool...i grew up close with my two older cousins, corey and nikki, my aunts and uncles and my wonderful grandparents...i have been fortunate enough to grow up with the four most amazing grandparents the world has ever seen...they know so much and they love me for me...i am eternally grateful for my family...i'm elated to get to share in my nikki's special day and i feel truly privileged to be a member of this family because they are the greatest people i know...wish us good luck on saturday!

Bond Girl Has Extra Fingers and Alcohol Speakers

ok so i looked on yahoo's home page today and one of the top four headlines is that one of the new bond girl has two extra fingers...seriously! this is news? what makes me laugh about it is that it's next to stories about the devastation of economy and the winner of last night's presidential debates...you see i don't care that they publish these kind of stories...but i don't think it's appropriate that they publish it next to a story about our failing economy...i just don't get how the two can coincide in any universe...that's just something that i wonder about

so tonight my sorority has to go and hear an alcohol speaker with the rest of greek life as well as all the sport's teams to hear about the evils of abusing alcohol...i've been hearing alcohol speakers since the seventh grade "if you drink...you will die" kind of sums up what we learn in the normal speaker we're used too..."don't drink, just don't do it, promise?" well and we've all seen how well those week because no teenager would ever drink, no, no, no we all know that that's not true...haha that may be one of the funniest things i've ever said...it's like teaching abstinence only sex ed in schools, but that's another issue for another time...telling kids not to drink and that's the only way is not going to keep anyone from not drinking...that's what i really like about the speakers we usually have here...normally they're more like comedians who tell us from the beginning that they're not there to tell us to never drink or we'll die...they acknowledge that we're adults and i for one appreciate that...they make it funny, but slip in the message while keeping it fun...it's a nice change from the constant lecture and i like it...but hey that's just me

Jake's Surgery and the Real Maverick

So my little brother went into surgery today to get his hand operated on...he broke in gym class a little while back and of course it had to be on the bowling hand...my brother is a pretty amazing bowler...i'm very envious of him for it...i bowled when i was a kid up until the beginning of high school, but it wasn't my calling, not like it is his...i always joke with him that they have a whole room with a cot set up for him in the back room of our local bowling alley...i feel like they see him more than we do...haha but anyway...he was playing football in gym and the ball hit his hand and majorly broke his pinky finger...i really feel for him, not being able to do the one thing he loves so much...well i did feel bad for him until i went to visit him at the bowling alley one friday when i came back from school and saw him bowling with his left hand, he bowled over 200 pins...so i guess i can't feel that bad for him...but the surgery is today and while i know he will be fine the mother hen in me comes out and i get really worried about him...he's my kid, my only brother...in my sorority i have over 35 sisters, but regardless of everything else, he's always my only brother...so i hope he's ok...

in other news...i like to look on yahoo's home page and see the different "news" stories (the quotes because sometimes i don't really think any of the stories are news worthy) but in the wake of the over use by a certain vp nominee, Sarah Palin, who overuses and misuses the term "maverick" yahoo on their homepage has a story about the origin of the word...so here's your history lesson for the day...

a family with the name of maverick in texas is particularly upset with senator john mccain's use of the word in relation to him...the word comes from a family called the mavericks who have been established since the 1600's...they were a very progressive family in politics until an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants...In the 1800s, Samuel Augustus Maverick went to Texas and became known for not branding his cattle. He was more interested in keeping track of the land he owned than the livestock on it...unbranded cattle, then, were called “Maverick’s.” The name came to mean anyone who didn’t bear another’s brand...so that's where the original term came from...so i the words of my big fat greek wedding "so there you go."

Good Morning, Good Night, Well Whatever

Hello and welcome to my first blog spot...my dad is an amazing blogger and it's really helped him get his voice out there so i decided to give it a shot for myself. I'm a 20 year old junior at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD...I'm a roller skating teacher and I'm the greatest sorority in the world Phi Mu! My sisters are amazing and love me for who I am...I have two incredible parents and a great 16 year-old brother who support me in everything...

I woke up a few days ago and realized...like it or not...I've really started to bridge the change between childhood and adulthood...I used to have a blog when I was younger, never really anything of consequence just venting my demons mostly...but anyway I used to sign it "The American Teenager" well when I started to write this just a moment ago I realized that I can't use my old blogger name anymore...I'm twenty the teen years are over...that may be the scariest thing ever! I quote movies, tv shows, songs and broadway shows like they're my real life...this makes me think of grey's anatomy, when meredith said "we're adults, when did that happen? and how do we make it stop?" i couldn't agree more...i'm still a kid on the inside, anyone who's known me for more than five minutes and they'll tell you same...i have the outward appearance of someone headed for adulthood but i consider myself constantly stuck at six...i liked being six....i miss being six...
